Without wasting any time, I will jump right into the action. There were 24 fights on the IMG_5354card at Man Up Stand Up Friday night, and almost all delivered absolute war. As I look at the fight card I hold in my hand, I notice that it is stained with blood. That is because as I sat ringside with my fight card in hand, I was sprayed with some blood from the face of Xavier Bell. Ricky Plunkett absolutely took the fight to Xavier, however, Xavier was more than game. He showed so much heart and chin that it was truly amazing. He never quit. Not even as he bled. His defenses even seemed to get better as the fight wore on. Great Job to both fighters in that exhilarating fight.

Kaleo Nash came into the ring as the obviously outsized fighter. His opponent, George Felix looked big and scary but Kaleo had the answer. The two swung it out until they were both gassed and tired. Then they swung it out some more. Both landed hard shots straight to the chin of the other, but neither would fall. In the end Kaleo left with his hand raised. I was left wanting more of this fight.

Fresh off of an MMA win over Robert Eaton, Jose Perez decided to try his hand at some kickboxing action. His opponent, Joseph Enaena, opened the first round by throwing a hard punch that played a part in dropping Jose right off the bat. However, Perez came back with absolute skill and power. His combos are deadly. Once he landed a few combos, it became one after the other until the fight was stopped in the 3rd round. At that particular moment in the fight card, this was my vote for fight of the night.

Unfortunately for Jose and Joseph, my fight of the night vote shot straight to Jan Quimoyog and Kanaloa Cook who blew theIMG_5462 roof off of the place. As soon as the fight started, the two were swinging away with hard shots. Being the smaller sized guys, the pace was high and it stayed that way the entire fight. Jan showed once again why he is a kickboxing titan as he seamlessly strung together shots on cook that seemed to hurt more each time they landed. But Cook was there to fight. He never fell to the canvas. He kept coming forward no matter what the cost. When most do the same , they are dropped like a fly but Cook looked like a man on a mission. A man with a big chin and an even bigger heart. If they gave out awards for this event, I nominate Cook for " Most resilient man alive award". I nominate Jan for " How the heck does he do that" award. And in my opinion this took fight of the night hands down.

The grudge match belts towards the end of the card seemed to be the big story, but the limelight was stolen by an upset that shocked the crowd and wowed them all at the same time. Nick Rivera and Ikaika Kupukaa slugged it out until neither man could barely stand. Though it seemed as if Ikaika was taking control, Nick would force his way forward with kicks and punches. As the fight drew forward, both fighters looked gassed and tired, but a second wind gave Ikaika what seemed to be the advantage. But because he did not meet the kick requirements in the close fight, Nick Rivera took the decision victory. Truly and awesome fight.

In the final fight of the night, the mighty Nui Wheeler was finally stripped of his crown. Nui has been on a tear in the world of kickboxing. He has accumulated numerous titles and defended them all several times. But this time he met a foe who was game to take his belt away. Jonah Vistante charged in and knocked Nui through the ropes on one of the first punches of the fight. It just didn't seem like the same Nui after that. Jonah showed his power and stuck to his game plan. Though Nui had flashes that seemed like he was coming back, he had already lost so much steam as Jonah gained momentum. At one point Jonah had Nui trapped in a corner and he delivered serious punishment. Jonah walked away decisively the new champ.

The sun hung low over Kapolei as the young warriors of Man Up Stand Up weighed in for the ensuing battle. The energy was high and the fighters were on point. This promotion is the place where the future stars make their first appearances and there is never a show they put on that doesn't showcase that. From the newcomers to the seasoned vets, everybody was clearly ready to scrap.

The ages of the fighters range much like the experience, but that only adds fuel to the flame of this awesome kickboxing event. The Filcom center is always packed when this show comes around and I assume tomorrow will be no different. Nui Wheeler will be defending his title YET AGAIN. Only this time, he will be taking on one of the fighting Vistante family. Jonah Vistante is said to have massive power in his hands. Will that power be enough to dethrone the reigning and long time champion?

The main event is merely a slice of the pie on this fight card. There are some names you have heard and some you will hear again. So make your way out to the Filcom on Feb. 5th to see the always exciting story of kickboxing as told by the explosive fighters of Man Up Stand Up.

Destiny Takes It To A New Level  E-mail

IMG_7549

Saturday night at Level 4 night club, Destiny Entertainment set off the Fireworks to a capacity crowd. The matches were so evenly matched that most went to decision but in the end the night of fights more than delivered the action. With a production that definitely sets the bar high, Destiny is taking the local MMA scene to a whole new level. Level 4.

There were too many stars shining brightly to name them all, but everyone who participated should be more than proud of themselves. Everyone left it all in the cage just as expected. Many noteworthy performances shined through, and if you weren't there to witness, I will do my best to fill you in.

Justin Babbs of Pain Train was having trouble early with a strong and excited opponent. Justin took some shots in the first round and seemed as if he was struggling to solve the puzzle. Then instantly he kicked into high gear and delivered serious blows to the face which appeared to have rendered his opponent unconscious. Appearances can be deceiving, but after a slight struggle Justin finished his opponent by forcing him to tap. Very exciting fight!

Max Holloway and Travis Beyer had what could have been candidate for fight of the night in my eyes. The two fighters squared off in the cage with a nice mix of kickboxing and ground skills. Every chance Max got he tried to unload with his fast hands and pinpoint kicks but Beyer continued to neutralize his stand up. Any and every time the fight went to the ground, Beyer found himself in dominant positions but not without running the risk of being submitted. Max showed expert vision with his submissions and seemed to come up just short of the victory on several occasions. Though Beyer took the decision I see both of them as absolute winners. Look out for their next fights because they are two fighters to watch.

After a last minute pull out of Kristen Jacobson, a young girl from Dirty Curty's camp took on Racquel Paaluhi. The last minute acceptance of the fight warrants serious respect considering who she was taking on. Racquel came in hard and fast and dominated the fight to a TKO. That fight brought the crowd to their feet like no other fight throughout the night. Thanks to both ladies for putting on a great show!

Danny Lopez continued his streak with a VERY impressive win over an opponent who had all the tools to take him out. Charles Hazelwood came in strong and resilient as he shook off all of Danny's takedown attempts. The two traded some punches with neither really dominating that aspect. As fast as you could blink Danny latched his arms around the arm and neck of Hazelwood while standing and it seemed as if Hazelwood was out before they hit the mat. Another masterful submission for Danny, but not a bad show of skill for Charles.

Colin Mackenzie and Dustin Kimura finally squared off in what seemed to be a slow start. The two traded kicks and punches for a few moments before the fight went to the ground and right into the bread and butter of Dustin. As the two battled for position, Colin found himself in one heck of a triangle choke. Dustin proved once again that he is no joke. Much like Dustin Kimura proving his ground skills are dangerous, Elijah Manners showed his ability to neutralize the one and only Keoni Farm. The two struggled back and forth with furious exchanges of kicks and punches. Elijah scored takedowns as well as Keoni. As the fight was stalled by an accidental groin kick, the momentum started to shift. The fight was so close that even the judges saw it as a split decision. Great battle between two tough warriors. I think most would love to see a rematch.

Closing in on the main event, we were all treated with an emotional fight between Johnavan Vistante and Koa Giddens. Koa came into the fight the bigger and seemingly stronger of the two but it would not prove to be his key to victory. Johnavan did exactly what he said he would do. He waited for Koa to commit to a shot and then he took him out. Koa smashed a hard shot to Vistante but was almost immediately hit and dropped with a flurry to his face following. Vistante scored a TKO on an opponent that could have been troublesome for him.

Finally the main event was upon us. Zane Kamaka was greeted with a wave of cheers unlike his opponent who was slightly booed. Zane made it clear to the crowd that he wanted no part of the booing of his opponent. His class showed even before the fight started. Maybe that small shimmer of kindness fooled Derek Stadler who was inevitably brutalized in the fight. To be completely honest Stadler caused slight problems for Kamaka when he would catch Zane's arms while on the ground. But after the second or third time, it was abundantly clear that Zane was just going to punch his way out of the attempt. After several attempts left Stadler's face a bloody mess, Kamaka sank in a rear naked choke that sealed to deal much to the crowd's enthrallment.

Thanks to all who came out to support the local fighters and a very special thank to all who participated in the event. You have all proven once again that Hawaii has the best warriors. Destiny lit the fuse and the fighters exploded with action. If you weren't there, you missed out. So I guess I will be seeing you at the next show.

GNC was packed with fighters and the sidewalk was packed with fans as the weigh ins took place last night. It was the biggest Weigh In event I have ever seen here in Hawaii. All of it just added to the excitement of the whole event. As the fighters weighed in one by one, everyone realized exactly how stacked the card is.
I spoke with promoter Jay Bolos to see just what he thought of the fight card.

" This event is huge. And from bottom to top, they are all great match ups. Most of these fights are main event worthy. The last ten fights are all going to be jaw dropping."

There isn't much left to say other than this event will match the hype. There are just too many great match ups. There are so many possibilities. Get to Level 4 tonight! Get your tickets! You cannot miss this event! This is just a preview of what is to come this year from Destiny.

With a card of this magnitude, it is hard not to be chomping at the bits just to see what will befall us all on January 30th. From top to bottom this card is STACKED. It seems as if Destiny outdoes themselves again with the so many clashes that are inches away from fight of the year. I cannot see any reason why an MMA fan would not be salivating over the fights that are looming this weekend.

IMG_7541Just in case you don't understand why these match ups are so perfect, then I will give you but a glimpse of what is coming. I wish there were enough time and space to break down each fight, but I will keep it to the main card. Get ready. . . Here We GO.

To start things out, lets take a look at the female bout that is promising to be a jaw dropping affair. Kristen Jacobson is coming into this fight off of a loss that went down to the wire. The pace was high and the tide turned several times. Kristen put on a fight that any fighter should be proud of, and but not for one error she could have taken home a W. Her obvious skills on her feet are only outshined by her possibilities on the ground. She has maximum escape capabilities and well as enough knowledge of submissions to make any opponent weary of the canvas. But coming in on January 30th, Jacobson will be clashing with a "Rock" and a hard FIST! Raquel "Rocky" Paaluhi is fresh off of the destruction of her last opponent at an X1 event a couple months ago. Paaluhi has shown her absolute power in her hands as well as a cool and methodical demeanor on the ground. Coming from a family of fighters and a team of hammers, Rocky will be a more than formidable challenge for the up and coming Jacobson. There is nothing more dangerous than a born and bred fighter, except maybe a fighter with something to prove.

If we have learned anything from watching the rise of Combat 50's Charles Hazelwood, it is that his hands and legs are deadly. MONSTER DEADLY. His fists come in and they repeat. He has found ways to string together combos that obviously shake an

IMG_7453

d rattle his opponents. His crushing leg kicks can take anyone out of the fight. However, Danny Lopez is on a two fight win streak and is more than prepared for a war. After an initial loss at Just Scrap, Lopez has become a steamroller in the division. Always an exciting fighter, Lopez is more than talented on the ground. His boxing skill is underestimated and his ground game is absolutely feared among all who watch him fight. Whether this fight stays on the feet or goes to the ground, it is shaping up to be a finish. There will be no decision in this one.

Finally we have Dustin Kimura and Colin Mackenzie. With a victory in this fight, both fighters will have answered some serious

IMG_7449

questions about their game. Dustin Kimura has shown time and time again that he is an absolute force no matter where the fight goes. He has systematically dispatched each of his opponents with relative ease. And those times when he did have trouble, he was

the clear victor. His ground game is. . . . Well I will say it. . . . UNSTOPPABLE! But that isn't where it ends for the young bang

er, because his boxing is VERY underrated. Most who have chosen to stand with him have ended up on the ground and from there they were submitted. Will Colin test him on the feet or take it to a chess match on the mat? Colin isn't one to sleep on when it comes to the stand up game. His kickboxing skills have grown more and more over his last few fights. He has proven on several occasions that he can either end it on the ground or on the feet. Colin has so much knowledge about MMA that it is hard to imagine that he doesn't have a well formulated game plan. Colin has been on somewhat of a tear as he has risen higher and higher in the rankings. He is on the cusp of a serious breakthrough in his career and promises not to take this fight lightly. Can he be the wrench in the gears of the Kimura Freight Train?? We will find out all this and more on January 30th.

Check out part two for the rest of the breakdowns.

WHEW!!! If you thought part one was interesting then you had better catch your breath and drink some fluids because your brain is about to get rocked with the top three fights on the January 30th fight card. Lets get to it!

IMG_7465WOW. . . Elijah Manners has been stated by so many fighters as their toughest challenge. His fists are lightening quick and amazingly heavy. His resilience is that of legend. Manners played the comeback kid in his last fight after getting caught with hard shots and submission attempts early. He came through with a mission to destroy the man across the cage. His level of intensity is something that most cannot handle. He seems to overwhelm and overpower his opponents before they have time to know what is going on. Not to mention, he recovers quickly, sometimes shocking his adversaries. Keoni Farm is like a hurricane. When he hits Oahu, there is a chance he will leave behind some wreckage. His absolute power is something that you cannot teach. His wrestling skill lands him into dominant positions over and over again. His submission skills come into play once he has gained dominant position. And did I mention that his stand up is slightly unorthodox leading some opponents to take MAJOR damage. This will be a battle of attrition. Who can weather the storm. Who can outlast the beating, the slamming, the choking and the gassing. I feel as if this fight may come down to who has more gas in the tank.

What is there to say about Johnavan Vistante other than the kid has skills. He has dancing skills. He has talking skills. What doesn'tIMG_7446 this guy have on his side. Vistante is a veteran in every aspect of fighting. He has traveled the bumpy road that is the sport we love so much. His talent has lead him to Japan and back and caught the eye of many in the local scene. Vistante has had absolute wars with some of the toughest in the business and found holes in their game. His kickboxing can only be described as fluidity at its core. He is an utter visionary with his punches and kicks that seem to be more reflex than individually planned movements. What can this spell for Koa Giddens??? I don't think it spells the end of his career. This may be just the challenge that this young powerhouse needs in order to solidify himself as a contender for top ten rankings. Koa has the obvious size advantage. He has made it clear that his size translates to his fighting because he has BIG takedowns and DEVASTATING ground and pound. The possibility that he may be outmatched on the feet doesn't seem to get to Giddens in any way. He is very talented, very confident and VERY ready to handle business on January 30th. This is another fight that I fear will not make it out of the first round. No matter who wins.

IMG_7471Finally to cap off the entire night of head smashing fury, we have the one and only Zane Kamaka takes on Derek Stadler. Here is what we know about Zane. . The guy is big, the guy is quick, and he is definitely on the list of people not to mess with. He proved against Bruski Louis that he can neutralize the takedowns. He has quick and powerful hands that are attached to those yardsticks he calls arms. His reach is insane which may be part of what makes him so hard to deal with. Every time this guy fights, he makes another stamp on face of MMA here in Hawaii. I don't know much about Derek Stadler. But what I can say is, the number one fear in the world is the fear of the unknown. Since the skills and tools of Stadler are relatively unknown, Kamaka may be afraid. And if he isn't, maybe he should be. Never underestimate an opponent you have never encountered. No matter the skill of the opponent, we know that Zane will put on a show. But if he overlooks this opponent, we may be looking at the upset of the night.

duke_aiona_540With the absence of the Pro Bowl this week here in Hawaii, the Lt. Governor hopes that this commission will bring more events here for sports such as Soccer, Golf, Swimming, MMA , Baseball and many more.

There were many representatives present at this mornings conference from all ranges of the sports world here in Hawaii. With this show of support, it is obvious that this is a step that the Lt. Hopes are set on having this new commission active by July.

Justin Buchholz—Terminus Objective  E-mail

Interview By: D. D. Mason - MMA Hawaii Staff Reporter

Justin BuchholsUltimate Fighting Championships (UFC) has scheduled another night of fights that promises to excite, as well as have a prolonged impact on multiple divisions. UFC -109 Relentless will take place on February 6 at the Mandalay Bay events center in Las Vegas Nevada.  The main card will be televised on Pay-Per-View, while Spike TV will televise two bouts from the undercard. One of those undercard bouts pits local fighter Justin Buchholz against Mac Danzig in what is a loser leaves town match.

Mac Danzig, who won season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter, has been on been on the end of a three fight losing streak.  Local fighter Justin Buchholz, who earned his way into the UFC by delivering knock out wins over some of Hawaii’s top talent, has been on a two fight losing streak. Justin took a few minutes out of his training schedule to chat with us.

MMAHAWAII: Aloha Justin. How has training camp been going for you so far, and have you done anything different in getting ready for this fight?

Justin Buchholz: The one thing I’ve done different for this fight is to train a lot more jiu jitsu, because Mac is a pretty good submission guy. The last two guys I fought were strikers; those were fun camps, because that’s what I love to do the most.

MMAHAWAII: Visualizing the fight in your head, how do you see it playing out?

Justin Buchholz: The way I see the fight going is that we come out, touch gloves or not, it doesn’t matter. I go right after him. I start pushing him back, I land some shots, he covers up, I’m too fast and I’m too strong, he gets hurt and he can’t continue. That’s how I see the fight going.

Justin Buccholz MMAHAWAII: Both Mac and yourself are coming into this fight with your backs against the Octagon, what’s your feeling right now?

Justin Buchholz: I love this feeling. Every single time the pressures been one and I’ve been put in the corner, I come out on top, and I see this fight going no different. I love it, and I think I’m more comfortable here, than say if I was the favorite. I’m fighting for my life and you will see it on February 6.

MMAHAWAII:  This fight will be televised on Spike TV, so this may the first time that your fans that have followed your career from Alaska and Hawaii will see you fight live; do you have anything special planned? Are you going to change up the hair color?

Justin Buchholz: (Laughs). My hair is going to be black. I’m not going to do anything crazy, I’m going to come out and kick some butt. I’m all business this time, Standard shirt, standard shorts. I need to shout out my whole team at Team Alpha Male, in Sacramento. I want to say thank you and congratulations to my jiu jitsu coach Fabio Prado, who just one the world championships in No-Gi. I want to also give a shout out to my striking coach Master Tong, as well as a bunch of guys at Results conditioning and my sponsor Tap Out. Tap Out s a great sponsor and they have had my back until the end.

MMAHAWAII: Anything you’d like to say to your fans and friends in Hawaii?

Justin Buchholz:  Just keep training. A big mahalo and shout out to the guys at Bulls Penn. That’s where I started making major moves in my career when I was training with them. I hope to after I beat up Danzig, to come back, show them some stuff I learned, hang out. It doesn’t matter where you’re at, it only matters how much you want it. Just keep pushing, and keep training. Don’t let anyone tell you to stop, and don’t listen to anything negative.
